Can You Paint A Steel Garage Door
Starting with a top panel of the garage door paint into the recessed area of the panel.
Can you paint a steel garage door. All of our steel doors can be painted but we strongly recommend using a quality acrylic latex paint only. Using an oil based paint will create a chemical reaction causing the original finish to bubble up and peel off. A gallon of paint ought to be more than adequate for a two car garage door plus a bit to spare.
You can apply two or more coats until you get the color you want. But remember putting a lighter color over a darker one may require more than one coat. To finish the door you need to apply a final thin coat of paint with the spray gun.
This will give extra protection to the steel garage door and keep the color strong. When you ve finished allow 24 hours before opening the garage door. Before you apply the primer and paint lightly sand the door with 400 grit sandpaper so the primer and paint will stick to it better.
Then apply 2 coats of the primer letting it dry after each coat. Metal garage doors can be painted by brush or by roller but if using a roller try and use one with natural fibers rather than man made. Next apply 1 coat of primer to help the paint stick and allow it to dry for 12 hours.
Then tape off any areas you don t want the paint to touch like the edge of the house. Step 3 continue painting the remainder of the panel until the entire panel is complete. Pay particular attention to the edges and corners and use a contour brush to paint areas that are hard to reach.
Remove the masking tape and the drop cloths. Allow your metal garage door to dry thoroughly for 24 hours. Acrylic latex exterior house paint is the best choice but be sure to choose a high quality paint.
